Hello beautiful Soul!
I'm Faith, painter, author, retreat leader and creative guide, living and working by the sea in Charleston, SC. My many online classes and book Painting the Sacred Within offer art techniques & tips to express your authentic inner voice. I have a passion for helping women connect with their most heartfelt ideas through creating art. It all begins when you ask yourself…
Are you ready to embrace the creativity you know you were made for?
I'm a lover of bright color, drips, unbridled expression, pure freedom, unapologetic happiness. I’m a believer that there is beauty in just about everything, and that anything worth doing takes time.
With two decades of personal painting experience I love guiding women to create art that they love. Welcome to my studio. where I share all the ways that you can work with me, my latest collections of paintings available for sale, find out about my workshops, retreats and all of my adventures!
Here's a bit more of my journey
::
After 16 years of living in New York City, earning our MFAs in Painting at Parsons & working in the New York art world, my husband Frank and I decided in 2011 that we wanted a slower pace of life so that we could live more intentionally, closer to nature with our young son and daughter, fulfilling our long time dream of living and working by the sea! So, we left Brooklyn, New York for Charleston, South Carolina where we now live in our dream house close to the sea. Since our move we had another baby and we absolutely love our laid back, beachy lifestyle here.
In New York the primary way that I got my work out into the world was selling my paintings in galleries, but in the years since our move I have experienced huge creative growth in my business all on my own terms!
In 2014 I began teaching a series of in person painting workshops to groups of women in my studio, I also started offering retreats and have co-created 3 domestic and 13 international art retreats in places like Costa Rica, Morocco, Mexico and France with my friend Mati! Each of these retreats has been more magical and transformational than the last, I truly LOVE connecting and creating with women in this way!!
I’ve also licensed my art to companies and I co-wrote my book Painting the Sacred Within (and am working on a second book proposal now yippie!). I am also deeply engaged in creating my paintings, selling them to collectors around the world. Hear me chat in depth about all the pivoting that I’ve done along the way in my creative career HERE in this podcast interview.
I have always loved making paintings, its just something I have to do. You can check out my full portfolio of paintings here.
I’m a classically trained painter with a deep love for abstraction, earning my BFA in Painting from Skidmore College, and my MFA in Painting from Parsons School of Design in 2001. With over 20 years of personal painting experience, creating and showing my work, I love connecting with and inspiring other creative women. I created my online creative classes, community and book, all because I wanted to paint in community and deepen connections with women around the globe. There is endless beauty in seeing those moments of transformation that come from going within and exploring our inspirations and authentic voices.
My approach to painting is intuitive and personal, I work to transform the public world of nature into a place of private knowledge. I draw inspiration from nature’s wild and small moments: mountains, moons, clouds, flowers, rain. Using these recurring motifs I speak to the relationship between the ephemeral and the eternal. I paint quickly and in many layers using acrylic and mixed media, creating washes, embracing drips and other happy accidents reflecting nature’s unpredictability while building up layers, texture and pattern. My paintings have been exhibited widely & included in multiple private collections.
I am the co-author of Painting the Sacred Within, published in 2017 with North Light Books, now Penguin Random House. I teach painting both online, across the US and at my International Art Retreats. My work has been featured in many books, magazines & publications including Painted Blossoms, Paint Lab, Color Lab, Seventeen, Calm, Happinez and Mabel Magazine. My art has also been featured on designs for the Ann Taylor Company Lou & Grey.
As a teacher I am grounded in a desire to help all of my students find their authentic creative voice through their art. I think that the more we share our experiences the more light we are able to give each other. I’ve been interviewed many times and answered all kinds of questions: from my painting process, being a mom and an artist, my birth experiences. Check out all those interviews right here.
You can also get to know me better in a series of Studio Chats between me & my co-creator (for our book, classes & retreats) Mati McDonough, where we dive deeply into topics including: creating a series, finishing & pricing your art, how to stay authentic to yourself, how to create a successful abstract painting, finding inspiration, staying on your creative toes, and the behind the scenes backstory of how our book was born.
When I'm not creating my art, I spend my time with my family. We love adventuring around our neighborhood in our golf cart, spending the day at the beach, local farmers markets. We are constantly revamping our garden and home into a secret hideaway, and planning our next adventure. We’ve logged many hours of travel as a family with plans to do lots more as our children get older.
You can find my work in my Shop, by appointment at my studio in Charleston (contact me to schedule a visit) and through Show & Tell Art & Design Gallery.
